From a licence plate to an access decision
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) reads a vehicle’s licence plate. At a parking entrance, that result can be used by an access system. Recognising the vehicle does not, by itself, establish whether it is authorised to enter.
Agree where the access rules live
Before choosing equipment, identify the system responsible for checking permissions. It may need to use bookings, permits or a managed vehicle list. Agree who updates those permissions and what happens when a change has not yet reached the entrance.
Plan the capture point
Review lane width, the vehicle’s stopping position and the camera’s view of the plate. Check the location under different lighting conditions. Use the selected equipment’s documentation to confirm installation requirements rather than applying one distance or angle to every site.
Give drivers a clear next step
Decide what information the driver needs while waiting for access. Where a display is part of the chosen setup, plan concise instructions for a normal entry and for an exception. Define who keeps those messages current.
Test the exceptions as well as normal entry
Include an unrecognised plate, a vehicle without permission and a network interruption in the acceptance plan. Agree a supported fallback with the operator, and confirm how the entrance returns to normal operation. These are project requirements to review, not assumptions about a device.
Questions for your project
- Which system authorises entry?
- Who maintains the vehicle permissions?
- Where will the vehicle stop?
- What happens if recognition or the connection fails?
